Up on the top of the Martinengo Bastion, part of the Venetian fortifications that protected the city during the Venetian period, there is the grave of the largest Cretan writer, Nikos Kazantzakis.

Nikos Kazantzakis was born on 18 February 1883 in Heraklion which was still under the Turkish rule, he was one of the most important contemporary Greek writers and the most translated worldwide. In his writings dealt with prose, literary fiction, poetry, philosophy and theater writing while still involved with journalism, politics and music. His works directed on the big screen and theater, and his books are known for the feeling of freedom that exudes.

The stone grave on the Martinengo Bastion accompanied by a quotation of his most important book that has been carved in the back part, below the wooden cross, "I hope for nothing. I am not afraid of anything. I'm free." This place is one of the only places where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Heraklion.
