The Municipal Market is at the center of the city of Chania, and is an organized public market where local merchants sell their products.

In the place it is today, was built the main bastion, Piatta Forma, of the Venetian fortifications of the city. Here operated until the early 19th century street market for supply of city residents. The municipal authorities decided in 1911 to create a building that would house the city market, to be more organized and to present a more elegant image of the city.

The building was built to the standards of the Marseilles market, influenced by the architecture of the industrial revolution. It has cross shape, which is separated into four wings, each of which has its own entrance.
