The Natural History Museum of Crete was founded in 1980 by the Department of Science of the University of Crete. Since 2007 the museum has been housed in the old electrical building on the coastal avenue of Heraklion.

In 3,500 sq.m. it houses zoological, botanical, palaeontological, geological and mineralogical fields mainly from the eastern Mediterranean and especially Crete. The museum is quite active by constantly developing its collections, conducting environmental research, and continuously developing educational activities.

An interesting activity worth visiting every by visitor is the earthquake simulation. Apart from understanding the phenomenon, and informations for the right treatment, it preaches real earthquakes of different levels and separate cases.
