The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno was founded in 1974. It's located at the heart of the old city, in a Venetian mansion of 17th century.

The building itself is a historical monument and a representative residence of Crete of Venetian era. The exhibition area of the museum includes 5 rooms where are exhibited over 5,000 folklore and historical artifacts of the island from the 17th century until today.

In museum's exhibits included hand-woven and textile art tools, basketry and pottery artifacts, objects of everyday use, traditional farming tools and processing tools of raw materials, tools and artifacts of traditional professions. In historical exhibits included weapons, coins, historical documents, stamps and flags of the Cretan revolution.
