The Venetian port of Rethymnon is one of the most picturesque places of the city, small in size but rich in beauty. Is the accomplishment of the Venetians to deal with the problem of siltation for the safety of ships.

Historically the harbor seems to exists since the Byzantine era in the 10th century AD .. Later in the 13th century AD Venetians began the construction of the breakwater, which is maintained until today, for secure hosting in galleys of the time. The Egyptian lighthouse, the harbor landmark that dominates at the edge of the breakwater dates in 17th century and has been built by the Turks.

The port is ideal for walks all the year round. In summer is full of life as the Venetian buildings now housed taverns and cafes offer visitors relaxation and special culinary delights. In winter the facades of Venetian buildings and harbor boats create a serene setting that takes us to another era.
